In other words... a clean and simple card today for the Color Throwdown challenge. The colours are perfect for fall, so that's how I themed my card.

Don't know who I'd give it too, wishing someone a "happy autumn" is not something I normally do - but alas, if the mood strikes, I'm prepared :)

As soon as I saw the colours for this week's Play Date Cafe challenge, I immediately thought of the Well Worn DSP from SU. They were perfect! So rich and masculine. Even the way the books are lined up in the colour story, and the 'stripes' of colour samples.

Any excuse to use those papers, and the "Have a Seat" stamp set make me happy :)

Isn't it gorgeous?! It reminds me of the library in "Beauty and the Beast"... And makes me long for a wall full of books, with a wicked ladder on wheels :)

The other day I went down to my crafty corner of the basement, and found this little note. I have a shelf where I put the "latest" cards that I have made... I only keep the ones there from the last time I stamped, so sometimes there's just 1 card, sometimes there are a few. When I reached up to the shelf to take down the older cards and put up my new one, this is what I saw:

In other news, Hunter and I made the most delicious dessert for tonight's dinner. Which is good, because dinner itself was less than stellar :P I was craving chili, so we made that, but it was incredibly dry and bland. Normally I throw in some beef brother, which I forgot tonight, so maybe that was the problem. Needless to say, the Apple Gingerbread that was had post-"dry chili" was well worth suffering through the main course for.

Off for a second serving... (of the deliciousness, not the dry)

CAS-ual Friday

This week's challenge at CAS-ual Fridays was "Mostly Monochromatic" - using 3 shades of a colour of your choice, plus brown. A little bit of structure, and still the freedom to choose the colour you want!

I chose yellow. Maybe it's the feeling of fall... maybe it's just because I had papers that "called" to me. Whatever the reason, I chose yellow - and I don't even really like yellow :P

I love lace.

A little while ago my grandmother gave me her old sewing box. Since then, I've found myself digging around in there for so many odds and ends.It's a treasure trove of randomness! And that's my favourite kind of trove :P

This week at Pals Paper Arts, they challenged us to use lace! I was terribly excited to see that. I love lace (despite the fact that I had the song "Chantilly Lace" in my head the entire time I created this card). I opened up the sewing box, knowing full well that I'd find something magical. "Magical" came in the form of a vintage piece of pink lace. It's a very light and delicate piece, so I wondered how well it would show up on the card. Turns out, it's very subtle, but that's what I like about it, I think!

I really like this card. It makes me think of a lot of things that make me happy: The lace from my grandma, the feathers are leftover from our wedding, and the patterned paper makes me feel like I just drank a big warm cup of tea.

Twine and combined challenges

My order from The Twinery arrived. It made me so happy. I can see myself using twine a lot in the future.

This card was made for two challenges. a colour challenge put forth by ColourQ, and a sketch challenge over at Pals Paper Arts.

I loved the colours over at ColourQ this week. I don't feel like I did them justice though. Then again, who else but Martha Stewart can make a bunch of stacked dishes look awesome?

Unfortunately, I don't have any Certainly Celery in my collection... I used Old Olive instead.

Herringbone Birthday!

After seeing the fantastic Herringbone technique used by Monica, over at Stamps 'n Jewels I knew it was something I wanted to try. Luckily, she posted a tutorial on how to do it (that's found here!) so I got to give it a shot myself! What a FUN card to make!

I always find myself looking for a masculine card/card style, and this was perfect when using the "Well Worn" DSP from Stampin' Up! LOVE the Well Worn papers. Love them.

I'm entering this into the Less is More "Anything Goes" challenge this week. I figure, although the technique isn't "simple", the end result is relatively clean and free of 'distraction'!

ScareEasy Challenge #2

It's time for me to challenge myself again. Last week, I posted about missing art, and as a result was starting my own weekly challenges to myself. You can read more about that here.

Male and Female - Jackson Pollock
Jackson Pollock is an American painter, and considered the commanding figure of the Abstract Expressionist movement. The reasons I love Pollock are all summed up quite nicely in this quote by him from 1947:

"On the floor I am more at ease, I feel nearer, more a part of the painting, since this way I can walk around in it, work from the four sides and be literally `in' the painting."

Although the painting I chose is traditionally un-Pollock (in that it's more visually representative), the colours are style that are so often associated to him are still apparent.

And, as a fun little aside, if you visit this site, you can create your own Pollock-esque art with just the click of your mouse :) Scroll around and left-click to change colours. It's awesome, I promise.

Living Simply with Children

As we patiently await the arrival of baby #2, I am constantly reminded of how quickly the past 9 months (heck, the past 12 months!) have gone by.

A few Christmases ago, my in-laws bought everyone a book or two. We gave them a wishlist and they picked the ones they felt like getting. I love getting books. I rarely spend the money on them myself, so it's such a treat to get them as gifts.

That year, I requested a book titled "Living Simply with Children". I read it, on and off, for about 6 months. Then, immediately after reading it, I started it again and finished it within a couple of days. It's been put away in our bookshelf now for over a year, but tonight I pulled it out again.

My son is asleep, and I was sitting at the computer looking for ideas on how to help him celebrate the changing of the season. I find the transition from summer to fall a big one for little kids. You don't go out swimming anymore, you start wearing long pants, all the green turns to orange/brown/red, etc...

So, amidst my web-travels, I was reminded that activities don't have to be extravagant to be enjoyed. In fact, the most simplistic and frugal crafts/outtings can be the most fun... and cherished in the long run!

Maybe you know how to live simply with your children - I'll admit, I'm part-way there, but I've still got some things to learn! - but if you're looking for a good read, even just to reaffirm what you already know about yourself and your parenting style, I highly recommend this book.

Another birthday

Tomorrow is our caregiver's birthday. She's 100% awesome. We love her to pieces. I guess that's how you're supposed to feel about the person who cares and provides for your child all day while you're at work!

Regardless, we feel so lucky to have her in our life.

A big day!... with an equally big post.

My friend is currently becoming an auntie! :) Her SIL was due today, and went into labour some time this afternoon/evening. They are just waiting on the call to say he's here. How exciting for her!!

As for me, I'm still waiting for little boy to make his appearance. But we won't talk about that... at least not directly...

When I was in labour for Hunter, my mom was by my side the whole time. She was responsible for my left leg, and my hubby was responsible for my right leg! They made an incredibly awesome support team. So much so that I knew I needed both of them with me again for this one.

As a "thank you", and a little token of appreciation for making my mother watch such an event, I made her a little brag book for the hospital pictures she's bound to take. While browsing around Dawn's Stamping Studio -one of my favourite places to browse!- I found this tutorial for an adorable mini album. I know it was perfect. Thanks to her amazing ability to make videos, creating it was a breeze!

I had SO much fun making this... The image to the left is what it looks like when it's open. I added to "different" pages to the front and back.

The middle pages are Whisper White cardstock, and are for all the pictures themselves. There are 6 in total.

The last page (if you can tell from the photo on the left) is a piece of Pool Party cardstock, where I intend to write a quick "thank you for being there" note.

The page at the front says "welcome baby", and is where she can write the date, time, weight and height of Baby Boy when all that is know... She has impeccable handwriting, so I'll let her do that part herself ; ) 

It's a piece of DSP from the "Pocketful of Posies" series, with a Whisper White sheet for writing, and another piece of Pool Party where I stamped "Welcome Baby".

Ahhh, that's better!

I posted earlier today with my entry into this week's ColourQ challenge. Throughout the day, every time I glanced at the card, I got this overwhelming sense of "ugh"! I knew, in my heart of hearts, that it just wasn't very good.

When my husband got home, I showed him the card. There was silence. Granted, I prefaced the show and tell with "I made this card today that I absolutely detest", so he may have been predisposed to detest it as well ;) Even still, he normally tries to convince me otherwise. No convincing today!

I made a new card for the challenge. I feel much better now. As a reminder, here is the gorgeous colour palette (that I botched the first time around)

A ColourQ challenge and a lesson in patience

I'm trying to do anything and everything to keep my mind off the fact that baby hasn't arrived.

So, after folding laundry, a game of Chinese crib, and an elaborately prepared lunch, and 7 written thank-you cards, I decided to participate in a challenge :)

I followed the ColourQ challenge this week: Pool Party, Lucky Limeade, Orchid Opulence, Rich Razzleberry and White.

Their inspirational image, as always, was gorgeous. I sometimes find that using all the colours is difficult - especially when you're staring at an object that has done it so effortlessly!

A challenge to myself

Lately, I've been missing art... to sit and think about the endless hours I used to spend going through books, websites, magazines, anything I could get my hands on that was even remotely related to art! It inspired and energized me on a regular basis. From classic art to graffiti art...

In this new stage of my life (the one that exists now that I've discovered card-making and stamping!), I feel like I've given up a part of me that I felt was really important.

So... I've decided to give myself my own weekly challenges. Ones that are art-related and that give me the opportunity to browse through books, websites, and magazines to inspire me again. And, I've decided to incorporate them into my new hobby of card-making.

With all that said, here's my "Scare Easy" challenge #1. Hey, if you're interested, you can play with me! :) Basically, I'm going to pick one of my favourite art pieces, and draw inspiration from them (either colour or composition). This one... colour!

The Flower Seller - Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera has always been, by far, one of my favourite artists of all time. I've always been fascinated by the liveliness and almost animated images of the Latin-American art scene. He can conjure up emotions with the simplest of images... but can create a whole story with an intensely detailed wall fresco.

It's no surprise that while searching for my first challenge to myself that I instantly went to this painting.

Fear and Loathing in Renovations

It feels like I haven't made a card in ages. I've been in serious 'renovation' mode the last two weeks, and have had very little time or energy to sit down and do something!

Not to mention, my whole house has been in disarray and I couldn't find any supplies even if I wanted to :)

That all being said, our living room and dining room is COMPLETE! I will post about that at another time... Also, and even more importantly - A corner of our basement has been transformed into a little "craft" area for me (and the kids!). We purchased a new dining room set, and rather than get rid of the old one (that's ancient, but still rather functional), we moved it downstairs. After extending it as far as it goes, there's room enough for me and my little critter to stamp our hearts out.

This also means all HBo's crafts and supplies are out of the living room as well, making it more of a 'formal' entertaining area, while the basement can be used for "the mess".

So, being able to wait no more, last night I participated in two challenges! It's funny, I find the longer I go without making a card, the more 'rusty' I feel. I can't being to explain how incredibly liberating it was though having all my supplies in one spot, and having my hubby sitting beside me jamming on the guitar while I created.

Challenge #1: Pals Paper Arts had another fantastic colour combination for us this week. One I found incredibly striking, particularly since I just painted my entire main floor gray :)

Challenge #2: The Play Date Cafe had one of my favourite challenges - a splash of colour! I had a wedding card to make for a wedding next (omg! THIS) weekend, so decided to use the "splash of red" challenge for that. Unfortunately, it's likely we won't be attending this wedding, as baby #2 has yet to make an appearance...
